The history of waist beads dates back to antiquity. Many believe that the history begins in ancient Egypt where they were called “girdles” and were worn by women as a status symbol. In West Africa, the tradition was made popular by the Yoruban tribe of Nigeria. Since traditional waist beads are strung on cotton cord (and without a clasp/hook) they can be a good tool to measure weight gain and loss. They will not stretch; they will either break or continue to roll up the waist when weight has been gained. Cut any additional string. Waist beads can be worn at all times and are not intended to be removed until you are ready to release them and change to a new set. The beads may dull with body products or soap, and is normal. Gently clean them if you desire with soap and water. You can use a bit of natural oil to give them sheen. If you would like them to be removeable, tie them loosely very low on your body in order to lift them off to remove. Your beads can endure almost any activity, but use caution when dressing and using the restroom to not catch the strands and break them.
